Vocabulary refers to «all of the words of our language. One must know words to communicate effectively. Vocabulary is important to reading comprehension because readers cannot understand what they are reading without knowing what most of the words mean. There are many effective ways to teach vocabulary, and the best method depends on the specific audience and learning style. Here are some general strategies that work well:
Multiple Exposures:
Repeated encounters: Increase exposure to new words in various contexts like reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This reinforces memory and understanding.
Visuals and realia: Use pictures, real objects, and diagrams to connect words to concrete meanings, especially for younger learners or abstract concepts.
Multiple definitions: Go beyond dictionary definitions. Explain words in context, using examples, synonyms, antonyms, and even anecdotes to paint a richer picture.
Active Engagement:
Interactive activities: Games, puzzles, debates, and role-playing exercises make learning fun and keep students engaged.
Word walls: Create a dedicated space to display vocabulary words with definitions, visuals, and sentences using them. Encourage students to contribute and revisit regularly.
Semantic mapping: Help students organize their understanding by creating visual maps showing connections between words, their parts of speech, synonyms, and antonyms.
