Introduction

Effective communication between a coach and an athlete is really important for high athletic performance. Interaction during training is not just about the technical instruction; it involves a deeper understanding on the level of motivation, support, and even managing emotional states. In today's environment, where demands for athletic success are rising and psychological pressures are mounting on athletes, this need for more nuanced and adaptive communication approaches becomes paramount.

The two main components that strongly influence the quality of communication are the coach's emotional intelligence (EI) and empathy. The first one helps to create an atmosphere of trust, understanding and respect, while the second one allows coaches to recognize and deal with both their own emotions and those of their athletes. While the importance of these aspects is evident, in real sports practice, their application often remains underestimated. Therefore, the paper seeks to explore

the role of empathy and EI in proper communication between coaches and their athletes.

The research methodology is based on a theoretical analysis of EI and empathy in coaching communication, drawing from existing psychological and sports science literature. The study examines key theoretical models, such as Goleman's EI framework and empathy components, and applies them to the coach-athlete interaction context, highlighting their impact on motivation, emotional regulation, and performance outcomes.

Main part. Theoretical foundations of empathy and EI

There should be empathic perception in effective communication between a coach and an athlete. Such fundamental concepts as EI deepen mutual understanding, as well as help in achieving high results.

The capacity of a person to be aware of, understand, and control their emotions and to effectively communicate with the emotional states of others is called EI [9].

The concept became the focus of active research in psychology and social sciences after Peter Salovey and John Mayer first described it as a cognitive-emotional ability [7]. Later, Daniel Goleman popularized this concept,

adding practical aspects of its application in both professional and personal life [4]. According to his model, EI includes several main components (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Goleman's concept of EI

The first component is self-awareness, which involves the ability to recognize internal emotional states and their influence on behavior. The second is self-management, or the ability to manage one's emotions to minimize their negative effects and support rational decision-making. The third component, social awareness, entails understanding the emotions of others and incorporating this understanding into interactions. Finally, relationship management encompasses the appropriate application of this knowledge to develop positive interpersonal relations. These elements are interdependent and provide the structural basis for successful interaction in emotionally complex contexts, including professional coaching activities.

Psychological empathy refers to the ability of a person to sense and share the feelings of another. It is one of the fundamental roles of the psychological functions in social interaction, as it contributes to mutual understanding, avoidance of conflicts, and mutual trust among the participants involved in communication. Traditionally, scientific literature views the phenomenon of empathy as two related components [10]. Cognitive empathy is characterized by the ability to identify and rationally analyze another person's emotional states. It is associated with understanding the motives and reasons behind someone's behavior, which is especially important in situations requiring in-depth analysis or decision-making. In the sports context, a coach's cognitive empathy allows them to correctly assess the needs and goals of the athletes, thus adjusting their approach to their preparation. Emotional empathy involves directly experiencing another person's emotions. It enables a coach to share the athlete's feelings, whether joy at victory or disappointment at defeat, thereby strengthening the emotional bond between them. This aspect of empathy is especially crucial in stressful situations where athletes need not only professionally support but also emotional involvement from their coach [6].

In other words, EI is the base for developing empathy, and empathy gives a more concrete and profound implementation in communication among people. The

relationship is crucial, especially in the practice of sport, since the coach needs to consider a wide variety of emotional and psychological factors that can affect the performance of athletes.

The impact of coaching communication on athletic performance

Communication between a coach and an athlete is a big factor influencing athletic performance. This provides a means of transferring knowledge and skills, while building an emotional atmosphere that either unlocks the potential of the athlete or constrains it. Coaching effectiveness significantly depends on the leadership qualities the coach possesses, as they not only guides but also inspires the athletes in gaining high results. A coach's leadership is built upon the ability to be a good role model, create a clear vision of goals, and establish trust-based relationships which sustain motivation and emotional resilience. It is reflected through a positive attitude, confidence in the success of the team and individual achievements by each member. Such qualities under high psychological and physical stress conditions help athletes overcome doubts and stay focused on their targets.

An equally important aspect of effective coaching interaction is the ability to adapt communication styles to the individual characteristics of athletes. During the preparation phase, the coach has to deal with big variability in personality features, emotional needs, and levels of motivation. All these peculiarities enable the development of an individual approach, taking into consideration all the features of a particular athlete. Thus, one athlete is motivated by gentle reinforcement and support, while another one needs a structured and controlled approach [3]. Flexibility in communication styles fosters a productive environment where each athlete can realize their potential.

Feedback is a very important tool in coach-athlete communication, enabling the modification of actions and strategies during preparation. Constructive criticism plays an important role in helping athletes to recognize their mistakes and find ways to correct them. However,

the effectiveness of feedback depends on whether the athlete perceives it as supportive rather than discouraging. A coach giving feedback in a kind and constructive way has created an environment for learning in which mistakes are opportunities for further growth and not a cause for self-criticism.

Feedback is often accompanied by motivational dialogue, which is an important aspect of coaching communication. This type of dialogue uses positive reinforcement, highlights achievements, and clearly defines steps toward reaching goals. Athletes who receive feedback framed within motivational dialogue show higher engagement and a greater willingness to improve. This process forms the foundation for sustained motivation and increased self-confidence.

The psychological aspects of coach-athlete communication also play a big role in their effective interaction. Good communication takes into consideration the emotional states of athletes, which can change because of stress, fatigue, or pressure related to competition. A coach who is able to be in touch with changes in the emotions of his athletes can modify their actions to reduce the negative influence of these factors. For instance, in moments of tension, the coach may employ measures that will have a soothing effect, while in moments when the athletes are indifferent, energizing actions may be required. Another way in which an athlete will interpret their coach is through non-verbal communication, such as body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, and eye contact. Friendly and open nonverbal communication fosters a comfortable psychological environment, whereas negative nonverbal cues, such as expressions of disappointment, can diminish an athlete's confidence [1]. Therefore, coaches must be mindful of how their nonverbal behaviors are perceived and use them to strengthen positive interactions.

The impact of empathy and EI

Coaching communication is multifactorial in its influence on performance. It really depends on whether the coach managed to inspire and lead athletes to better ways, gave good constructive feedback to them, or thought about the emotional condition. The application of flexible forms of communication with psychological awareness in the field of interaction with athletes produces an atmosphere conductive to maximum potential being reached.

The role of empathy and EI in coach-athlete communication

The central role of empathy and EI is to establish effective communication between a coach and an athlete. The important features of such qualities will be to help a coach both to understand and manage the emotional states of the athletes, and thus to provide an environment that motivates and is supportive for their development. Coaches who possess high EI are capable of trust-based relationship-building and work accordingly with their style of communication, effectively adjusted to the athlete's emotional state and circumstances.

A coach can show empathy by deeply understanding what an athlete has gone through personally, especially during the time of pressure or failure. Showing empathy means building good rapport on an emotional level and keeping the athletes in trust and respect. This in turn develops trust and boosts morale. As a basis for empathy, EI allows the coach to manage both their own emotions and those of the athletes during the critical moments of stressful situations-for instance, just before a major competition or immediately after a disappointing loss. Table 1 shows the main aspects of the role of empathy and EI in coach-athlete communication and their impact on performance.

Table 1.

on coach-athlete interaction [2, 5]

The interaction aspect The role of empathy The role of the EI

Understanding an athlete's emotional state The ability to recognize and share an athlete's experiences, reducing stress and anxiety Awareness and control of the emotional atmosphere in the process of interaction

Creating motivation Building trust through showing sincere concern for the athlete's needs and goals Using EI to increase an athlete's self-confidence

Conflict resolution Preventing misunderstandings through a deep understanding of the athlete's point of view and experiences Effective management of your emotions for constructive resolution of controversial situations

Thus, empathy and EI complement each other, creating a harmonious foundation for successful communication. For example, in a situation of stress, an empathetic coach can instantly identify the source of anxiety for an athlete, while EI enables them to propose relevant support approaches to suit the situation. This is important because a psychological comfort zone for an athlete affects his or her level of focus and ability to deliver good results. These attributes, however, not only facilitate a supportive environment for growth for the athletes but also excellent performances.

An excellent example of incorporating EI and empathy into the training process is the dynamic between Bob Bowman and Michael Phelps in the coach-athlete dyad [8]. Michael Phelps is one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the Olympics, having won a total of 28 medals, 23 of which are gold. Known for his incredible achievements in swimming, Phelps has set numerous world records throughout his career.

The basis for such a long-term cooperation was not only the professionalism of the coach himself, but also the satisfaction of the psychological and emotional needs of the athlete, which became one of the keys

to brilliant results. One of the most important things in this approach was to pay attention to the emotional state of the athlete, especially at the most critical moments. Using the elements of EI, Bowman created a supportive environment for the athlete in which he could be himself and be confident in his coach. He helped him master self-regulation skills, which have become an important tool and part of his preparation for sports, and taught him relaxation techniques such as controlled breathing, which help to cope with anxiety before competitions. Another important feature of Bowman's work was the creation of favorable conditions for Phelps, which provided a space for open conversations about his emotional state and problems in order to partially relieve psychological stress. Thanks to these methods, Bob Bowman helped Phelps not only develop exceptional athletic skills, but also overcome the psychological barriers that are inevitable for any professional athlete during his career.

This example shows how a highly emotionally intelligent and empathetic coach can affect not only the physical but also the psychological aspects of an athlete's preparation, giving support in all respects. In the long term, it creates conditions for consistent success, enhancing the resilience of the athlete both in training and during competitions.

Conclusion

Empathy and emotional intelligence are, of course, critical in establishing effective communication between coaches and athletes, forming the very basis of achieving high athletic performance. It is through these qualities that the coach can be allowed to understand the emotional state of his athletes, develop their motivation, and create relationships based on trust-what is especially important in conditions of great psychological and physical stress.

In the long term, the development of empathy and emotional intelligence in coaches contributes to fostering sustainable motivation, increasing athletes' confidence, and enhancing their ability to overcome challenges. The described example demonstrates that focusing on the emotional aspects of interaction not only improves athletic performance, but also creates cohesive teams that are able to withstand difficulties on the way to success. These findings highlight the need for further study and integration of approaches based on empathy and emotional intelligence as basic elements of coaching practice.
