The article discusses phraseological units describing intellectual properties of a human. It then focuses on those units with the semantic components “Clever”, “Crazy” and “Stupid” and the intellectual activity of a person with the words “teach”, “think and their classifications by semantic, structural, stylistic value and phraseological historicisms. After studying phraseological units, we came to the understanding that phraseology is formed as an anthropocentric subsystem of the language, since the semantics of the phraseological unit reproduces the spheres of a person’s mental abilities, his feelings, experiences of conflicts and reconciliations. So phraseological units denoting intellectual activity and intellectual properties in the English language have evaluative means of expression that are correlated not only with mental, but also with behavioral, age-related, human characteristics, showing cultural and ideological people's ideas about the concepts of “stupidity” and “mind”.

Abstract. The article discusses phraseological units describing intellectual properties of a human. It then focuses on those units with the semantic components "Clever", "Crazy" and "Stupid" and the intellectual activity of a person with the words "teach", "think and their classifications by semantic, structural, stylistic value and phraseological historicisms. After studying phraseological units, we came to the understanding that phraseology is formed as an anthropocentric subsystem of the language, since the semantics of the phraseological unit reproduces the spheres of a person's mental abilities, his feelings, experiences of conflicts and reconciliations. So phraseological units denoting intellectual activity and intellectual properties in the English language have evaluative means of expression that are correlated not only with mental, but also with behavioral, age-related, human characteristics, showing cultural and ideological people's ideas about the concepts of "stupidity" and "mind".

Key words and phrases: phraseological units, intelligence, various methods, classification of phraseological units, semantic, structural, stylistic, intellectual properties and activity, fusions, units, combinations, subordinate union, negative and positive characteristics.

I. Introduction

Phraseologisms are special units of language in which the cultural identity of the people is reflected. They indirectly reflect the views of the people, the social system, the ideology of their era. The phraseological wealth of any language is the property of its national linguistic consciousness. Most phraseological units are untranslatable into other languages: each nation shows its nature in them, the familiar figurative turn of speech. The impact of phraseological units gives the language vividness of the national character and unique flavor that distinguishes one from the other both the languages of centuries-old culture and the literary languages newly composed by writing.

English is very rich in phraseological units. His phraseological system captures the vast historical experience of the people, reflecting the life and culture of the nation. Getting acquainted with a foreign language, a person simultaneously penetrates into a new national culture.

When studying phraseological units, first of all, one should talk about the evaluative value of phraseological units - quality, derived from their emotional significance. In accordance with the definition of V.N. Telia, by assessment, is meant "a judgment on the value of the whole or its individual property". The presence of evaluations in phraseologisms denoting the intellectual properties of a person is due to the fact that "evaluative values always relate to the rules of life and form a valuable picture of the world, always something specific to a particular linguistic composition" (Telia, 1977:160). From the above it follows that intelligence is a value, the presence of intelligence is evaluated positively, the absence is negative. The term intelligence was introduced by the Austrian scientist W. Stern in 1911.

The study of phraseological units of intelligence and mental abilities, especially in the English language, is done by few linguists, which is the relevance of this work.

II. Literature review

There are various methods of organizing phraseological units. Linguists have not yet developed a single principle for the classification of phraseological units. We will consider several classifications of phraseological units of the English language, offered by different authors.

1. Semantic classification of phraseological units

Most well-known is the classification of Academician V.V. Vinogradov. In accordance with it, all phraseological units from the point of view of the semantic unity of the components are divided into three categories: phraseological fusions, phraseological units, phraseological combinations (Vinogradov, 1977:126). It is well known that phraseological units arise from a free combination of words, which is used in a figurative meaning. Let us analyze these types of phraseological units in use in modern English.

Phraseological fusions, or idioms, are completely indivisible, indecomposable stable combinations, the general meaning of which does not depend on the meaning of the words that compose them: kick the bucket (dec.) - to die.

Phraseological unities are such stable combinations of words in which, in the presence of a single figurative meaning, the signs of semantic separation of components are clearly preserved: to spill the beans - give out a secret

Phraseological combinations are stable turns, which include words with both free and phraseologically related meanings: a bosom friend - close friend

2. Structural classification of phraseological units

N.M. Shansky distinguishes the following typical groups: "adjective + noun" [Shansky 1964: 23]. The noun and the adjective can be semantically equal and both are semantic components: smart Aleck, clear head.

"Noun + form of the genitive case of the noun"

Such phraseological turns in meaning and syntactic functions are equivalent to a noun: "apple of discord, point of view, the palm of supremacy. Words in such turns are semantically equal.

"Noun + prepositional form of the noun"

These phraseological units are lexically-grammatically related to the noun, in all the dependent components are unchangeable, and the additional ones form different case forms, have a strictly arranged distribution of components: "fight for life, running on the spot, the thing is in the hat.

"Preposition + adjective name + noun"

In terms of lexical and grammatical meaning and syntactic use in a sentence, these phraseological units are equivalent to an adverb, the words that make them are semantically equal, the distribution order of the components is fixed: "to the seventh heaven.

"Verb + noun"

Phraseologisms of this group are mainly verb-predictive and are indicated in the sentence as a predicate, the order of distribution of components and their semantic relationship may be different: "drive home, make a fool, and act as the ass.

"Constructions with subordinate unions"

According to the lexical and grammatical meaning, such phraseologisms are adverbial, in which the order of the components is fixed, in the beginning there is always a union: As like as two peas in a pot, bare as a bone

"Constructions with negation not"

According to the lexical and grammatical meaning, such phraseological units are verb or adverbial, they perform the function of a predicate or circumstance, the components are semantically equal with a fixed order of location: not of this world.

3. Expressive - stylistic classification of phraseological units

N.M.Shansky divides the following groups of phraseological turns in terms of their expressive-stylistic properties: [Shansky 1964: 25] Interstyle, Colloquial, bookish, archaisms and historicisms.

Interstyle phraseological turns - "these are stable combinations of words. Common and used in all styles of language. " Interstyle phraseological units do not have any assessment: from the bottom one's heart, to keep one's word, secret vote.

Colloquial phraseological units - "these are constant combinations of words, mainly or exclusively used in oral speech". They have a figurative character and differ in expressive-stylistic coloring (affectionate, swearing, ironic, contemptuous, playful, etc.): to take the edge off one's hunger - to kill a worm, to play a dirty upon smb -put a pig.

Bookish phraseological turns - "these are stable combinations of words, mainly or exclusively used in written speech".

They differ in the scope of use (written language) and the "enhanced" expressive-stylistic coloring (book, solemn, pathetic, poetic, etc.): quirk of fate - a game of fate, split second - in no time.

Phraseological historicisms - "these are phraseological turns that have come out of active use in connection with the disappearance of the corresponding phenomenon of reality".

For example: Dutch bargain - a bargain concluded while drunk, dutch courage - the courage of a drunk, dutch treat - treating a man, in dutch - being in trouble, talk like dutch uncle- read moral.

In our research, we investigate phraseological units in three directions: as part of a semantic, structural, expressive-stylistic system with the meaning of the intellectual properties of a person with the meaning of "Clever", "Crazy" and "Stupid" and the intellectual activity of a person with the words "teach", "think and analyzed the structural and semantic properties of phraseological units reflecting, and to trace their stylistic marking

III. Discussion

1. Phraseological units with the meaning "Clever"

We have studied 24 phraseological units with the meaning of "Clever". According to the semantic classification, the largest numbers of phraseological units (12 phraseological units) are phraseological combinations. For example: wise as Solomon and wise as an owl means very wise, have a good head on (one's) shoulders means to be capable of making sound, responsible decisions.

The average numbers of phraseological units (9 phraseological units) are phraseological units. For example: to have all one's buttons on- To be mentally sound or stable, to have one's feet on the ground - to be and remain in a calm, stable, sensible, and pragmatic state or condition.

The smallest number of phraseological units (9 phraseological units) is phraseological fusions. For example: thinking mug - a head.

According to the structural classification of phraseological units with the meaning of "Clever", we found the largest number of examples of verb-predicative (12 phraseological units), for instance, to have a good head on the shoulders, to pick smb's brains - use other people's thoughts. The average number of phraseological units (10 phraseological units) we found examples of adjective comparison, coinciding with the functions of the adjective. For example: a clear head, smart Aleck. We found the least number of examples with a construction with a subordinate union (2 phraseological units). For example: a mind like a steel trap.

According to the stylistic classification of phraseological units with the meaning of "Clever", we found the largest number of examples of colloquial phraseological units (21 phraseological units). For example: smart Aleck, to have a good head on the shoulders, to pick smb's brains. The smallest number of phraseological units found bookish phraseological units (3 phraseological units). For example: a mind like a steel trap.

So, we have studied phraseological units with the meaning of "Clever". In many phraseological units, an intelligent person is represented in phraseological turnovers as a person with positive qualities. For example: to have one's feet on the ground - to have healthy and stable sense, to have a good head on the shoulders. The presence of an intelligent person makes life easier. For example, in phraseological units as wise as Solomon, to have an old head on young shoulders - to be smart beyond the years, drive home - make clearly understood, make a point, etc. the affirmative degree of the mental state is emphasized. In turn, an intelligent person is compared with wisdom, comparing him to Solomon the wise. For example: as wise as Solomon. Also, an intelligent person is characterized by his age, for example: to have an old head on young shoulders - a young person who acts in a more sensible way than you would expect for a person of their age.

A large amount of knowledge and wise experience add years to a person. It is also worth noting that the names of body parts are often involved in the formation of phraseological units of the English language. The body, head, shoulders, legs are all parts of the body involved in phraseology.

For example: a sound mind in a sound body - a healthy person can think normally and act instantly in any given situation, to have one's feet on the ground, to have a good head on the shoulders. The body is compared with strength, with health, maintaining a healthy mind. Firm feet on the ground are compared with stable sense. The shoulders are compared with strength, with health, keeping his head on himself. The head is compared to mental activity. Using the names of the parts of speech in a figurative sense, a person tries to convey his thoughts and emotions deeper and more fully from what was said. The head is a kind of repository of the mind, so this phrase is used in many phraseological units. Basically, the connotation of phraseological units is positive. For example: be in one's right mind (be of sound mind) - to be mentally well, a clear head - a clear mind, a word is enough to the wise - a smart one understands perfectly. An intelligent person in these phraseological units is characterized with clarity, grace, health and speed of understanding. There is also a negative connotation in phraseological units. For example: smart Aleck - know-it-all, too clever by half - painfully smart, too smart. Negative connotation is characterized by revolutions, denoting a person "extremely intelligent", claiming a high opinion of his intellectual abilities, who wants to show his intellect and knowledge.

This phraseology is used for a negative characteristic. Basically, the method of formation of phraseological units of this concept is compared. For example: As wise as Solomon.

2.Phraseologisms with the meaning "Stupid"

We have studied 19 phraseological units with the meaning of "Stupid". According to the semantic classification, the largest numbers of phraseological units (8 phraseological units) are phraseological fusions. For example: cut didoes - to behave in mischievous or silly way, a slow coach - one who thinks slowly as slow-witted. The average number of phraseological units (7 phraseological units) is phraseological combinations. For example: a memory like a sieve - to be exceptionally forgetful or absentminded, fools rush in where angels fear to tread -means that stupid people often do or say things without thinking enough about them first as no law has been written for fools. The smallest number of phraseological units (4 phraseological units) are phraseological units. For example: make a fool, to play the fool- deliberately act foolishly.

According to the structural classification of phraseological units with the meaning of "Stupid", we found the largest number of verb-predicative examples (10 phraseological units). For example: act as the ass, to play the fool - act foolishly. We found an average number of phraseological units in meaning and syntactic functions equivalent to a noun (6 phraseological units). For example: the brain of a pigeon - a person who lacks intelligence or who makes stupid decisions, a babe in the woods is a naive person, a simpleton. We found the least number of examples of phraseological units with subordinate unions (3 phraseological units). For example: a memory like a sieve, as damp as a fish.

According to the stylistic classification of phraseological units with the meaning "Stupid", we found the largest number of examples of colloquial phraseological turns (13 phraseological units). For example: not to have a brain in one's head - to have nothing in the head, to be a brainless fool, to think badly, fools grow without watering - fools themselves will be born, they will not be sown. The smallest number of phraseological units found bookish phraseological units (6 phraseological units).

For example: fools rush in where angels fear to tread - no law was written for fools, cut didoes - fool around.

So, we have studied phraseological units with the meaning of "Stupid". In many phraseological units, a stupid person is represented in phraseological turns as a person with negative qualities. Stupid is characterized by physiological parameters, where the proportions of various parts of the body are compared with the level and quality of intelligence. From this we can conclude that in the mind according to phraseological dictionaries, a

person's appearance is a strong measure in the concept of the level of the mind. For example: not to have a brain in one's head, act the goat - to fool around, a memory like a sieve. The presence of a stupid person makes life difficult. For example, in phraseological units a fool at forty is a fool indeed - a fool at forty and really a fool, as damp as a fish, every fool will be meddling - fools like to interfere in everything and etc. emphasizes the negative degree of mental state. In turn, a fool is compared with animals, fish and birds.

These phraseological units are used for negative characteristics. For example: as damp as a fish, the brain of a pigeon, act the goat, and act as the ass. Also, a stupid person is compared with inanimate objects. For example: a memory like a sieve. Basically, the connotation of phraseological units is negative. For example: as damp as a fish - dumb like a fish. This phraseology is used for a negative characteristic. Also, for a fool, age does not matter. As in infancy - a fool, and in forty years. For example: a babe in the woods, , a fool at forty is a fool indeed. Basically, by the method of formation of phraseological units of this concept of metaphor. For example: the brain of a pigeon, a bag of wind - hollow. These phraseologisms are formed using metaphorical transference.

3. Phraseologisms with the meaning of "Crazy"

We have studied 38 phraseological units with the meaning of "Crazy". For example: to have got apartments to let - lack of brain as being mad or crazy, to be a button short - being crazy, to be eighteen bob in the pound - being mad. The average numbers of phraseological units (11 phraseological units) are phraseological units. For example: go out of one's mind - lose one's mental stability, become insane. The smallest number of phraseological units (9 phraseological units) is phraseological fusions. For example: Tom O'Bedlam- a madman, scatter-brained-crazy, balmy on the crumpet - crazy, to out-Herod Herod-confuse, midsum - mer madness - insanity, madness.

According to the structural classification of phraseological units with the meaning "Crazy", we found the largest number of examples of verb-predicative (22 phraseological units). For example: lose one's head get confused, hit the ceiling (the roof) - freak out, turn smb's brain - to drive someone crazy.

The average number of phraseological units (10 phraseological units) we found examples with a construction with a particle not. For example: not in one's right mind, not to have all one's buttons - go crazy. We found the least number of examples with a construction with a subordinate union (7 phraseological units). For example: as mad as a March hare - out of his mind, crazy, losing his mind, as mad as a hatter - completely crazy.

According to the stylistic classification of phraseological units with the meaning "Crazy", we found the largest number of examples of colloquial phraseological turns (30 phraseological units). For example: of unsound mind crazy - insane, poison smb's mind- poison someone's consciousness, mind; not in one's right mindy. The smallest number of phraseological units found bookish phraseological units (9 phraseological units). For example: Tom O'Bedlam and fool's paradise is ghostly happiness.

So, we have studied phraseological units with the meaning of "Crazy". In many phraseological units, a crazy person is represented in phraseological turns as a person who is losing his mind, mind, head. For example: be out of one's mind - go crazy, lose your mind, lose one's head get confused. Madness is compared with the deprivation of reason, reason and also with unhealthy thinking. For example: of unsound mind - crazy, insane. Also phraseological units are compared with vegetables, fruits. For example: go bananas - go crazy, be off one's onion

- go crazy, to be eighteen bob in the pound - not everyone is at home. Vegetables and fruits mean an empty head, without reason. In turn, we discovered phraseological unit with an animal. For example: as mad as a march hare. The month of March is compared to the crazy month. In this phraseology, insanity is compared with the cowardice and insanity of the hare. Also given are examples from bookish phraseological units. For example: to out-Herod Herod, Tom O'Bedlam. These phraseological units are characterized with heroes who have lost their minds.

It is also worth noting that the craziness in phraseological units is compared with different subjects. For example: to have wheels in one's head - go crazy, to be a shingle short- go crazy, to be a button short, hit the ceiling (the roof). In these phraseological units the words wheel, shingle, button, ceiling are presented. Madness is compared to empty objects. Thus, the connotation of phraseological units is negative. Basically, by the method of forming phraseological units of a given metaphor concept for example: As mad as a hatter - completely crazy, to have wheels in one's head - go crazy. This phraseologism is formed using metaphorical transference.

4. Phraseologisms with the word "think"

We have studied 11 phraseological units with the word "think", which means intellectual activity. According to the semantic classification, the largest numbers of phraseological units (3 phraseological units) are phraseological combinations. For example: think up- to invent, think over- to think through. The average number of phraseological units (6 phraseological units) is phraseological fusions. For example: thinking cap - seriously think about something, think tank - brain center, think out of the box - try to find innovative, innovative solutions. The smallest number of phraseologisms (2 phraseological units) are phraseological units. For example: First think then speak - think first before speaking, Think aloud -speak one's thoughts audibly.

According to the structural classification of phraseological units with "think", all examples are verb-predicative (11 phraseological units). For example: Put on one's thinking cap - work with your head, thinking mug

- head.

According to the stylistic classification of phraseological units with the word "think" we found the largest number of examples of colloquial phraseological units (8 phraseological units). For example: think aloud, think

over. The smallest number of phraseological units is found in bookish phraseological units (3 phraseological units). For example: Think tank, think out of the box.

So, we have studied phraseological units with the word "think". In many phraseological units, an intelligent person is represented in phraseological turns as a person with positive traits. For example: Put on one's thinking cap, think fit - consider it appropriate, think on one's feet - think, plan, solve something during a conversation, on the go. Phraseologisms are characterized with seriousness, expediency, speed of thought. The human head is compared in phraseological units with a cap, mug, feet, etc. For example: think tank, thinking cap, think on one's feet, thinking mug. Bearing in mind durability (mug), a container for the mind (tank), cap, which is designated instead of the head. Also, phraseological units with the meaning of intellectual activity are compared with reflection, pondering, and decision making. For example: think up, put on one's thinking cap, think over - think over, think aloud, think fit. Basically, the connotation of phraseological units is positive. For example: think over - reflect, ponder, think over. An intelligent person in these phraseological units is characterized with seriousness, expediency, and speed of thought. There are also phraseological units with a negative connotation. For example: thinking mug. This phraseology is used for a negative characteristic. All phraseological units emphasize the affirmative degree of the mental state. Basically, by the method of formation of phraseological units with the meaning of a metaphor. For example: Put on one's thinking cap - work with your head. This phraseologism is formed using metaphorical transference.

5. Phraseologisms with the word "teach"

We have studied 7 phraseological units with the word "teach". According to the semantic classification, the largest number of phraseological units (6 phraseological units) are phraseological combinations. For example: to teach a hen to cluck - teach a scientist, to teach a cock to crow - teach a scientist. The smallest phraseological units (1 phraseological unit) are phraseological union. For example: To teach iron to swim- engage in a hopeless business.

According to the stylistic classification of phraseological units with the word "teach", we found the largest number of examples of colloquial phraseological units (7 phraseological units). For example: to teach an old dog new tricks - to teach someone in old age, to teach a dog to bark- to teach a scientist.

So, we have studied phraseological units with the word "teach". In many phraseological units, a person is compared with animals. For example: to teach a dog to bark, to teach a hen to cluck. A person is characterized in phraseological units with the inability to do anything that needs to be taught. For example: to teach an old dog new tricks, to teach a serpent to hiss - to teach a scientist. Basically phraseological units with a negative connotation for example: to teach iron to swim - do a hopeless job. This phraseology is used for a negative characteristic. Basically, by the method of formation of phraseological units with the meaning of a metaphor for example: Teach one's grandmother to suck eggs - to teach a scientist, "eggs do not teach hens". This phraseologism is formed using metaphorical transference.

Conclusion

So, we investigated phraseological units with the meaning of the intellectual properties of a person with the meaning of "Clever", "Crazy" and "Stupid" and the intellectual activity of a person with the words "teach", "think". The connotation of phraseological units with the meaning of "Crazy" and "Stupid" is negative. In many phraseological units, a crazy person is represented in phraseological turns as not clever person. And they also characterized with vegetables, fruits and other items.

In all phraseologisms, a stupid person is represented with a negative degree of mental state. The presence of a stupid person makes life difficult. It is also worth noting that the names of body parts are often used in a figurative meaning, a person tries to convey his thoughts and emotions deeper and more fully from what was said. The head in this concept is a kind of lack of reason, so this phrase is used in many phraseological units.

The situation is different with phraseological units with the meaning of "Clever" and "Intellectual activity". In many phraseological units, an intelligent person is represented in phraseological turnovers as a person with positive qualities. The presence of an intelligent person makes life easier.

It is also worth noting that the names of body parts are often involved in the formation of phraseological units of the English language. Using the names of the parts of speech in a figurative sense, a person tries to convey his thoughts and emotions from what was said deeper and more fully. The head is a kind of repository of the mind, so this phrase is used in many phraseological units. Basically, the connotation of phraseological units is positive.

Phraseologisms with the words "teach" and "think" are compared with a person who does not know how to act. The connotation of these phraseological units is negative. Intellectual activity is characterized by quick wit, the ability of mental activity. Thus, mental ability is a value, the presence of mental abilities is evaluated positively, the absence is negative.

The analysis of the given phraseological units of the English language shows that they are evaluative means of expression, correlated not only with mental, but also with behavioral, age-related characteristics of a person, showing the cultural and world outlook of the people on the concepts of "stupidity" and "mind".

Having studied phraseological units denoting intellectual activity and intellectual properties in the English language, we can come to the result that they are evaluative means of expression that are correlated not only with mental, but also with behavioral, age-related, human characteristics, showing cultural and ideological people's ideas about the concepts of "stupidity" and "mind".

As a result, the goal was achieved: a description of phraseological units of human intelligence in the English language. This thesis makes a certain contribution to the development of phraseology in terms of studying phraseological units.
