Текст научной работы на тему «MODERN METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A SCIENTIFIC REVIEW»

MODERN METHODS OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE: A SCIENTIFIC REVIEW

Abstract

The methods for teaching English as a second or foreign language have evolved alongside advancements in pedagogical theory, technological tools, and a deeper understanding of learner needs. This article reviews modern approaches in English language teaching (ELT), focusing on communicative language teaching (CLT), task-

based learning (TBL), content and language integrated learning (CLIL), and technology-enhanced language learning (TELL).

Introduction: English has emerged as a global lingua franca, playing a critical role in international communication, business, academia, and technology. This increasing importance has heightened the demand for effective methods of teaching English to non-native speakers. Traditional grammar-translation methods have given way to more dynamic approaches that focus on interaction, real-world application, and learner autonomy. This article examines the key modern methods currently shaping English language teaching, evaluating their impact on learners and identifying areas for future research and improvement.

1. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) - One of the most prominent methodologies in ELT today is Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). CLT focuses on enabling learners to communicate effectively in reallife situations rather than solely mastering grammatical rules. Its core principle is that communication is both the means and the goal of language learning. Lessons are structured around real-world tasks, such as asking for directions or engaging in discussions, which require learners to use English in practical, meaningful contexts.

Key Features of CLT: Focus on fluency over accuracy: Learners are encouraged to prioritize effective communication, even if their speech contains grammatical inaccuracies. This approach helps to build confidence and facilitates more natural language use.

Role of the teacher as a facilitator: Rather than lecturing or directing, teachers guide students through tasks and encourage peer interaction.

Authentic materials: CLT often uses materials like newspaper articles, podcasts, and videos, allowing students to engage with contemporary English usage.

Effectiveness of CLT: Research indicates that CLT enhances learners' communicative competence, especially in terms of fluency, listening skills, and conversational ability. However, it has been critiqued for sometimes neglecting grammatical precision, leading to a need for complementary methods that address both communication and formal language accuracy.

2. Task-Based Learning (TBL) - Task-Based Learning (TBL) is an extension of the communicative approach that organizes lessons around tasks that mimic real-world activities. In this method, the language is learned as a tool to complete specific tasks, such as making a reservation, planning a trip, or solving a problem.

Key Features of TBL: Task focus: Language structures and vocabulary are introduced as needed to complete tasks, with the task itself being the central focus of the lesson.

Meaningful context: Learners are motivated to engage in meaningful use of the language, with grammar and vocabulary learned in a contextualized manner.

Feedback and reflection: After completing the task, students reflect on their language use, which allows for both fluency development and increased accuracy over time.

Effectiveness of TBL: TBL is highly effective in promoting problem-solving skills and critical thinking, while also fostering language learning through authentic communication. However, its effectiveness may depend on the careful selection of tasks that are relevant to learners' language levels and goals. In some contexts, learners may struggle with unfamiliar tasks, making scaffolding and support essential.

3. Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) - CLIL is a dual-focused approach in which students learn a subject, such as history or science, through the medium of English. This integration allows learners to acquire both subject knowledge and language skills simultaneously.

Key Features of CLIL: Content-driven lessons: Language is not the primary focus of the lesson; rather, it is used as a tool to access content in another subject area.

4. Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) - Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) incorporates digital tools and platforms into English language instruction, enhancing the learning experience through multimedia, interactivity, and online resources. From language learning apps to virtual reality

experiences, TELL opens new possibilities for personalized and immersive learning environments.

Interactive content: Digital games, simulations, and apps provide interactive ways for students to practice language skills in engaging formats.

Access to global resources: Online platforms allow learners to connect with native speakers, engage in real-time communication, and access diverse materials from around the world.

Conclusion: Modern methods of English language teaching, such as CLT, TBL, CLIL, and TELL, reflect a shift towards more learner-centered, communicative, and technology-integrated approaches. These methods prioritize practical language use, critical thinking, and real-world application, offering students more dynamic and engaging learning experiences. References:
