Proverbs offer a unique window into the cultural values and linguistic patterns of a society. This study explores how the use of parallel corpora of Uzbek and English proverbs can facilitate deeper understanding of both linguistic structures and cultural perspectives. Пословицы предлагают уникальное окно в культурные ценности и языковые модели общества. В этом исследовании изучается, как использование параллельных корпусов узбекских и английских пословиц может способствовать более глубокому пониманию как языковых структур, так и культурных перспектив. Анализируя выбранный набор пословиц, мы выявляем существенные сходства и различия в культурных ценностях, метафорическом языке и структурных выражениях. Результаты подчеркивают образовательные и переводческие преимущества использования параллельных корпусов для сравнительного анализа пословиц, проливая свет на кросс-культурные идеи и повышая точность перевода.

ABSTRACT

Proverbs offer a unique window into the cultural values and linguistic patterns of a society. This study explores how the use of parallel corpora of Uzbek and English proverbs can facilitate deeper understanding of both linguistic structures and cultural perspectives. Through analyzing a selected set of proverbs, we identify significant similarities and differences in cultural values, metaphorical language, and structural expressions. АННОТАЦИЯ

Пословицы предлагают уникальное окно в культурные ценности и языковые модели общества. В этом исследовании изучается, как использование параллельных корпусов узбекских и английских пословиц может способствовать более глубокому пониманию как языковых структур, так и культурных перспектив. Анализируя выбранный набор пословиц, мы выявляем существенные сходства и различия в культурных ценностях, метафорическом языке и структурных выражениях. Результаты подчеркивают образовательные и переводческие преимущества использования параллельных корпусов для сравнительного анализа пословиц, проливая свет на кросс-культурные идеи и повышая точность перевода.

Introduction

Proverbs, as concise expressions of wisdom and cultural values, offer rich material for cross-cultural study. Understanding proverbs across languages not only requires linguistic knowledge but also cultural awareness, as proverbs are often deeply rooted in a society's worldview. In recent years, parallel corpora have become a powerful tool for studying languages, offering side-by-side examples that enable comparative analysis of structures and meanings. For Uzbek and English, parallel corpora of proverbs reveal insights into both linguistic patterns and cultural attitudes, making them valuable for educators, translators, and language learners alike. This study aims to demonstrate how parallel corpora of Uzbek and English proverbs provide meaningful insights into cultural and linguistic similarities and differences.

To explore these insights, we compiled a corpus of widely used Uzbek proverbs and their English counterparts. Sources included dictionaries, language databases, and previous studies on Uzbek-English translations. The selection process prioritized proverbs with equivalent or similar meanings in both languages, allowing for direct comparison. Each proverb pair was analyzed for:

• Linguistic Structure: Syntactic and grammatical differences between Uzbek and English versions.

• Cultural Themes: Core messages and values expressed, reflecting cultural perspectives on topics such as family, morality, and life lessons.

• Metaphorical Language: Use of figurative language, examining how metaphors or symbols differ between the two languages. Data was analyzed qualitatively to highlight thematic and linguistic patterns, as well as quantitatively to determine the frequency of specific types of expressions.

The analysis revealed key insights into both linguistic and cultural aspects of Uzbek and English proverbs.

Linguistic Structure. Uzbek and English proverbs exhibit distinct structural patterns, with Uzbek proverbs tending to use simpler, shorter phrases compared to English. For example, the Uzbek proverb, Ko'p bilgan kam gapiradi ("He who knows much speaks little") uses a straightforward structure, while the English equivalent "Silence is golden" uses a metaphorical structure without an explicit subject. This difference illustrates how each language encapsulates ideas succinctly, reflecting linguistic preferences and stylistic norms.

Cultural Themes. A prominent theme across Uzbek proverbs is community and respect for elders, while English

For instance, Ota-ona duosi - fido bo 'lgan yo 'l ("Parents' blessings are the path to devotion") underlines the reverence for parental guidance in Uzbek culture. The English equivalent, "Honor your father and mother," conveys a similar message but without the depth of sacrifice expressed in the Uzbek version. These thematic variations highlight the Uzbek cultural focus on family and respect, contrasted with a more individual-centered approach in English.

Metaphorical Language. Uzbek proverbs frequently use imagery rooted in nature or daily life, while English proverbs often employ more abstract metaphors. For example, Yomg'irdan keyin quyosh ("After rain comes sunshine") uses natural imagery, similar to the English "Every cloud has a silver lining." However, the metaphorical structure in English leans toward a symbolic, less literal expression. This difference shows a tendency in Uzbek for relatable, tangible imagery, connecting proverbs more closely to daily experiences.

Discussion. The findings indicate that parallel corpora serve as a valuable tool for understanding cross-cultural nuances in language, particularly through proverbs. The structural differences observed align with broader linguistic norms in Uzbek and English, where Uzbek favors directness and simplicity, and English employs metaphorical abstraction. Thematic differences, particularly around family and individualism, mirror broader cultural values, with Uzbek culture prioritizing collective respect and familial bonds, while English culture emphasizes personal autonomy.

Using parallel corpora not only aids in translation but also deepens cultural understanding, as translators and language learners can observe firsthand how each culture frames universal themes like wisdom, family, and perseverance. These insights reinforce the importance of cultural context in translation, especially for culturally rich elements like proverbs. For educators, this comparative approach can serve as an engaging method for language instruction, enabling students to appreciate the intercultural layers embedded in language.

Conclusion. Parallel corpora of Uzbek and English proverbs reveal valuable insights into both linguistic structures and cultural values. By analyzing proverb pairs, we see how language reflects unique cultural priorities, offering practical and educational advantages for translators, linguists, and language learners. Future research could expand the corpus to include more diverse proverbs or explore other Central Asian languages, further contributing to the understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity through proverbs.
