ABSTRACT

This article defines the role of Information and Communication technologies in teaching English language and literature.

Keywords: ICT, classroom, English language, literature, collective reading.

INTRODUCTION

Today technology has become an inevitable part of most of life aspects. In fact, education is using its advantages for its own benefit. Thanks to Information and Communication technologies, educational spheres, including literature has evolved a lot. Several scholars have contributed a lot to enrich literature knowledge of students in a level above via technologies advancements. One of these examples can be illustrated in the work of Dilip P.Barad (Bhavnagar University, India) who has experimented pragmatic aspects of ICT so as to teach English language and literature.

METHODS

There have been many discussions concerning dangers of ICT towards behavior of students; however, we cannot neglect its advantages as well. There are a lot of potential benefits of ICT to justify promising results in educational context, plus literature. And one plausible instance would be experimentations of ICT to analyze practical merits in terms of economics and literature conducting. Particularly, he registered for the latest reports as well as questionnaires in a few websites like www.cross-tabsurvey.com along with www.monkeygizmo.com. He utilized examples from these websites and as a result he witnessed the high level of interests of students. The reason behind it can be the extracts presented from the internet were as live as something happening at the moment in comparison with the books which may be at least one year old (the latest one). At present time, educators are required to be up to moment not even up to date in order to grab attention of learners.

He had done several experiments to check the effectiveness of ICT

implementation towards influence of students' achievements in terms of economics as well literature. In economics class he found great interest in the eyes of students and therefore asked them to be registered in www.monkeygizmo.com and www.cross-tabsurvey.com websites and send circulated reports to his e-group. The result was awesome, students admitted that they improved the language remarkably as well as topics were much more comprehensible. Another testing had been done to boost literature students' reading skills through Microsoft's Encanta Encyclopedia and topic related websites. It resulted in deeper comprehension of literature concepts of students. Because Encanta is a rich resource which contain myriad multimedia along with images making literature lesson go interesting. In light of collective reading of websites, online references, e-encyclopedia, Power Point and Word files students could understand myths and mythology of Greek and Roman; poems and plays; literary theories and modern -isms easily and better.

DISCUSSION AND RESULTS

There are several effective instances of ICT usage in literature lessons like collective reading, teaching plays/ novels with movies thanks to power point presentations, and teaching poetry with audios recited by native speakers.

The implementation of technology has become an inevitable part of our lives and its benefits can be witnessed in English literature classes as well. Indeed, literature works are a bit longer; it is, therefore, makes students feel a little exhausted at times. To address this issue collective reading can come handy way. That is to say, one masterpiece has been given as a home assignment, not every student is able to finish it. In that case next day at the lesson they cannot keep up with discussions about that part. However, collective reading makes it easier to discuss and all students will be aware of what is being discussed. Collective reading can be achieved through word or power point file projected on the screen and read together. Alternatively, teacher can refer to web sites in the classroom or use CDs, e-encyclopedia, e-dictionaries, and e-thesaurus, etc. It is worth to mention that collective reading helps to develop cognitive reading skills as well as provides some space for individual interpretation. To do this, websites along with Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia are useful. Hence, collective reading of websites, online references, e-encyclopedia, PowerPoint and Word files helped in learning:

(c) Literary theories and

(d) Modern -isms.

Novels and plays, indeed, are interesting. There are a range of resources like VCDs/DVDs/Audio books which contain novels or plays of our syllabus. Sometimes to watch or listen to them may be tiresome due to its length. To avoid from this situation Power Point presentation application can be practical. Instead of watching a whole play at once, teacher can cut the play into pieces and bits. Students can read a part of it, and then can watch other part. Plus, teacher can use audio or video clips, created by him/herself or select from video libraries from web resources in a Power Point presentation. To admit, creating Power Point presentation is not an easy task; however, it is really interesting and worth trying because it truly reaches out to the students.

At times teaching poetry makes a teacher a bit trouble in terms of reciting poems, ballads, epics, lyrics, sonnets, etc. As a solution several websites can help. One of these is www.librivox.org which involves a range of poems in audio version, recited by native speakers. It is web portal where anyone is able to upload and download recitations.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the influence of Information and Communication technologies towards educational context may be positive once teachers can implement it in a right way. Doing this, educators can witness the higher results and interest of students. Admittedly, several barriers can be witnessed like shortage of time and resources, sometimes lack of teachers' understanding of IT skills. However, if these limitations are solved, educational programs may improve one day. Because numerous studies have been carried to test the change of habits of teenage students while implementing ICT tools in teaching along with learning English as a Second language. The integration of ICT in teaching and learning can be a medium letting various approaches and pedagogical philosophies implement.
