Abstract. Digital competence is becoming one of the main requirements for higher education teachers. Computer technologies have long been an integral part of education, ICTs are included in all educational programmes, references to web resources are contained in university course and discipline work programmes. The article is devoted to analysing the peculiarities of using artificial intelligence (AI) in English language teaching. The theoretical basis of AI application, prerequisites of its introduction, as well as the history of development of artificial intelligence technologies in language education are considered.
Keywords: artificial intelligence, English language learning, personalisation of learning, educational technologies, chatbots, automatic assessment, speech recognition, digitalisation of education.
The modern world, characterised by globalisation and rapid technological development, requires new approaches to teaching foreign languages, especially English, which is an international means of communication. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming various industries, including education. Its application in English language teaching allows personalising the process, increasing its interactivity and efficiency. The introduction of AI into educational practice is becoming relevant, especially in the context of digitalisation and the increased demand for remote learning.
In many areas of human life, artificial intelligence has already proven its effectiveness. In education, AI offers unprecedented opportunities for the automation of routine tasks, the personalisation of learning and the creation of adaptive learning environments. It holds particular promise for English language education, where technological tools can help overcome language barriers and enable access to quality education [1].
Artificial intelligence is an umbrella term for technologies that aim to mimic human cognition, including machine learning, natural language processing and computer vision. Creating adaptive learning systems that can respond to the individual needs of students is the main purpose of using AI in education.
Students learn better when they actively interact with the material, according to constructivist theory. By providing interactive learning, AI-based programmes such as virtual assistants and chatbots encourage student engagement. Furthermore, according to the spaced repetition theory, using AI to automate the creation of personalised review schedules promotes improved vocabulary recall.
The first experiments with the use of technology in language learning began in the mid-20th century, with the development of language labs and language lab-based programmes. However, with the development of internet technologies and the emergence of interactive online platforms such as Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, the real breakthrough came in the late 1990s.
In the early 2010s, the integration of AI into educational applications became possible with the development of machine learning and NLP technologies. In 2011, for example, Duolingo used machine learning algorithms to tailor courses to individual users. AI-based conversational training has become more accessible with the advent of speech recognition systems such as Google Speech and Siri.
It should be noted, however, that the application of interactive technologies in the field of education has been gradual. The first to use them

were students searching for information on the Internet, the use of various applications and programmes for translation from a foreign language into the mother tongue and vice versa, the creation of educational websites, etc. [2]. However, at the present time, with the penetration of digital technologies into all areas of our life, it is impossible to imagine the educational sphere without them.
However, at the present stage, with the penetration of digital technologies into every area of our lives, it is absolutely impossible to imagine the educational sphere without them. In the age of digitalisation, artificial intelligence is attracting the most attention.
In Russia, the use of AI in education is part of the national digitalisation strategy. AI-related programmes are supported under the federal project Digital Educational Environment, which is part of the Education national project.
Some examples of successful initiatives include the following:
- Sirius - an educational centre for gifted children that actively uses AI to analyse performance, recommend courses and identify talent;
- Russian Electronic School (RES) - a digital platform that incorporates AI for analysing user behaviour and personalising learning content;
- Teacher training institutes are using big data analytics systems to monitor teaching quality and develop new teaching methods.
Kyrgyzstan, being a developing country, faces certain challenges in the field of digitalisation of education. However, projects related to the use of AI are gaining more and more attention. There are such national initiatives:
- The Sanarip Kyrgyzstan project is creating platforms for online education that introduce AI elements to adapt the educational process to the needs of students.
- Universities such as the Kyrgyz National University and the Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University are testing AI systems to analyse academic performance and adapt educational trajectories.
Kyrgyz educational institutions are collaborating with international organisations such as USAID and the World Bank to introduce AI technologies. An example is the use of adaptive learning applications for learning English and maths in primary schools. However,
the main obstacles remain the lack of specialists, the high cost of technology and the weak digital infrastructure in the regions. Nevertheless, projects related to multilingual learning and learning in remote schools show significant potential for the use of AI.
The significant potential of these technologies to transform education systems is demonstrated by the experiences of Russia and Kyrgyzstan in using AI in education. Both countries are taking steps to create more personalised, accessible and high-quality education, despite differences in the scale of implementation and level of digitisation. The process of adapting AI and making it an important tool for learning and development can be accelerated through collaborative efforts at national and international levels [3].
Let's move straight on to the application of AI in the teaching of foreign languages. There are a large number of programmes and applications that can be used by teachers of foreign languages. It is enough to mention Grammarly (read and write - punctuate, spell, construct sentences), Speechify (read and listen), elevenabs (work with video and audio, write, speak), Quillbot.com (read, vocabulary, write -punctuate, paraphrase, grammar), ChatGPT (write, read, speak), Character.ai (vocabulary, write and speak), Deeple (read and write -paraphrase, translate), Duolingo (teaching English).
Here is an example of how chat bots and adaptive learning platforms can be used in English classrooms. To deliver an interactive lesson, an English teacher uses a chatbot on Duolingo or ChatGPT. The technology provides a personalised approach by adapting the material to each student's level and interests.
How it works in practice:
Step 1. A topic is introduced: The teacher invites the students to take part in an interactive dialogue with a chat bot. For example, the topic of the lesson might be 'ordering food in a restaurant'. The bot will ask questions, suggest answers, and ask for corrections if the student makes a mistake.
Step 2. Grammar and vocabulary practice: Using new vocabulary, the bot provides immediate feedback and exercises in sentence construction.
Step 3. Conversation practice: Students record their answers and the AI analyses the
pronunciation, points out mistakes and suggests how to improve.
Step 4. Homework: Based on their mistakes during the lesson, students receive personalised assignments from the AI [4].
Despite these facts, AI in teaching English has some Limitations. They include:
1. Lack of Emotional Intelligence. AI tools cannot replicate the empathy, cultural sensitivity, or personal encouragement a human teacher can provide.
2. Limited Creativity and Contextual Understanding. AI struggles with nuanced language use, humor, idioms, and cultural context, which are critical in language learning.
3. Over-Reliance on Technology. Excessive dependence on AI can reduce opportunities for human interaction and collaboration, which are essential for communication skills.
4. Access and Digital Literacy Gaps. Not all students and teachers have access to reliable technology or the skills to use AI tools effectively.
5. Quality of Feedback. AI provides standardized feedback, which might lack depth or fail to address complex errors in writing or speaking.
6. Ethical and Privacy Concerns. AI systems often require user data, raising concerns about data security and privacy for students and educators.
7. Lack of Adaptability to Dynamic Classrooms. AI cannot respond flexibly to spontaneous classroom discussions, emotional needs, or unexpected teaching moments.
The examples below show how AI can improve different aspects of the English language learning process, making it more interactive, more efficient and more learner-centred.
8. Cost of Advanced Tools. High-quality AI tools can be expensive, making them inaccessible for schools or individuals with limited budgets.
9. Technical Limitations. Errors in voice recognition, translation, or content adaptation may hinder learning rather than support it.
10. Cultural Biases. Some AI tools are trained on limited datasets, which may introduce biases or fail to accommodate diverse linguistic backgrounds [5].
While AI offers innovative solutions, its limitations emphasize the continued importance of human teachers in creating a balanced and effective language learning experience.
Artificial Intelligence has significantly transformed the field of English language teaching, offering personalized learning experiences, instant feedback, and innovative tools to enhance engagement and accessibility. It supports teachers by automating repetitive tasks, analyzing student progress, and providing valuable insights into learning patterns. AI-powered tools like chatbots, speech analysis software, and gamified applications make language learning more interactive and efficient for students of diverse backgrounds.
However, AI is not without limitations. It cannot replace the emotional intelligence, cultural understanding, and adaptability of human teach-
