Наши неокартезианские тела по частям

Мы помешаны на здоровье. Отсюда наше стремление поддерживать свое тело в рабочем состоянии. Рабочее состояние? Это очень механистичный способ рассуждения. Рабочие детали (working parts) есть у машин. Одной из моих тем является возврат ко все более механизированному взгляду на тело. Наши органы, — такие как сердце или почки, — это крупные части наших тел. Наши гены 221 часто мыслятся как крошечные части, хотя представление гена как физической сущности в наших клетках скорее надумано. Когда мы в хорошей форме, все части нашего тела работают исправно. До недавнего времени крупные и малые части тела конституировали различные аспекты нашего телесного существа (bodily essence). Они были неотделимы от нас самих, каждая часть по-своему. Мы мало что могли сделать с ними, но теперь мы можем многое.

Историки медицины учат, что тело стало конституироваться и определяться органами около 1800 года. Книга «Рождение клиники» Мишеля Фуко популяризовала эту идею. Мы узнали, что медицинский взгляд не проникал сквозь тела, чтобы рассмотреть, находятся ли гуморы1 в состоянии равновесия или нет. Вместо этого он был обращен на внутренние органы и ткани.
