Abstract. The article deals with expressive competence, which is a combination of abilities, knowledge, skills and creates a positive emotional atmosphere both in the process of elementary and vocational communication, which allows to recognize the emotions of the partner in communication, and express our own emotional state in the dialogue of cultures. Much attention is paid to the role of the teacher of a foreign language of higher education as a conductor of knowledge, who should exceed a limit of the ordinary building of basic and vocational competencies of students of non-linguistic faculties, but pay great attention to the quality of foreign language communication, the speech culture index, which can be achieved by forming expressive competence in teaching and educational process of training a foreign language. In this regard, especially the manifestation of communicative competence in two aspects — speech and textual through a variety of linguistic means is mentioned, namely: lexical, grammatical and phonetic. The article presents a script of a Christmas event that can be of interest to English teachers of higher and secondary education and be used for conducting classroom and extracurricular activities on the eve of Christmas holidays.
Keywords: expressive competence, building, foreign language, nonlinguistic faculty, nonlinguistic student, elementary communication, vocational communication, combination, knowledge, skills and abilities, culture of speech, emotional atmosphere, classroom and extracurricular activities.
(Night is the mother of council, Go I Know Not Whither, Fetch I Know Not What), 8 идиом ( unbosom oneself, to rack one's brains, to dawn on, to say nothing of, to cut a long story short, out of the blue, it is my province, to leave a lot to be desired), 4 крылатых выражения (Phoenix rising from the ashes; Phoenix secret; Deeds of Hercules; The apple of discord), 2 цитаты (O.Wild. «Romance never dies. It is like the moon and lives forever» Mark Twain. «Facts are stubborn things») и строки из 10 англоязычных хитов, как например, в названии сценария «I Am Dreaming of a White Christmas». I AM DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS Fairy: Hello, everybody! Let me introduce myself. I'm a fairy, a mythical being of folklore and romance usually having magic powers and dwelling on earth in close relationship with humans. Some people don't believe in fairies though legends of us have been around for thousands of years... We help you because we connect to your own lives, dreams, anxieties. We help children learn how to navigate life[16].
So, if you think of fairies as creatures made of the four elements of earth, air, water and fire, and creatures meant to help and are essential to the balance of these elements, then my choice wasn't in vain, since I'm here to tell you a Christmas story which will happen to a girl of 17. She doesn't guess that I have written this tale for her because the story of the fairy tale may happen in any place of the world where a girl of 17 may live.
I'll begin narrating traditionally... Once upon a time, there lived a young, pretty girl named Cathy. She lived with her father, a surgeon, and mother, a sales manager from a big import company. Her parents being very busy people, are always tied up. And now, though it is the eve of Christmas, they are out, too. Cathy is doing literature and waiting for her parents. She is upset a little because. well she will tell you everything herself.
Cathy: Where are my parents? Why shall I be alone on such a day? Mum, I haven't seen you for ages, and you dad, are operating and operating on your patients. I have a lot to tell you, but instead I have to sing : Show me the meaning of being lonely Is this the feeling I need to live (walk)with? Tell me why I can't be there where you are? There's something missing in my heart [171.

Isn't it you, mum?
Mum: Yes, my honey. Is it me you are looking for? Are you feeling lonely?
Cathy: Why do you guess?
Mum: I can see it in your eyes. I can see it in your smile...
Cathy: I've been alone with you inside my mind. 'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do...
Mum: Tell me how to win your heart... But let me start by saying "I love you" [18]. And where is dad?
Cathy: Think and guess.
Mum: An urgent operation?
Cathy: As usual. Why do people fall ill so often? It seems to me they are in the habit to fall ill on holidays.
Mum: There are really a lot of sick people and our dad tries his best to help them. To treat is his job and he does it perfectly well. He's saved so many lives of mums and dads. We must be proud of him.
Cathy: I see, I am a bit egoistic, but there are too many sick, aren't there?
Mum: Agree.
Cathy: Why?
Mum: It's a long story to tell and not now. You'd better tell me how are you?
Cathy: I'm afraid I've a problem.
Mum: What' s the matter?
Cathy: I was given to make a talk on Greek Mythology.
Mum: Are you kidding? It doesn't sound like a problem. The Internet and literature resources are full of information.
Cathy: It is really so, but I dream of some unusual, original and amazing presentation of the topic, and fell myself talentless.
Mum: All the people are talented but some of them bury their talents. You shouldn't disregard your abilities and gifts. Try your best to use them. And now, go to bed, to your dreams. Night is the mother of council. Let Fortune the goddess of chance and luck help you. When you awake, your dad you are so missing ,will be here and you'll find a present put by Santa Clause under the Christmas tree, and...
Cathy: Mom, as if I'm a baby!
Mum: You are my sweet baby.
Fairy: Cathy goes to bed and falls a sleep under the song "Dream a Little Dream of Me". In her Christmas dream in colours she sees Olympia and Hera singing "I Am Dreaming of a White Christmas" with a book of Fairy Tales in her hands.
Zeus is coming in.
Zeus: Oh, Hera your song is wonderful. I see you are in high spirits. What does it mean?
Hera: Majesty, son of Kronos, what sort of thing do you want to hear?
Zeus: Some pleasant since I'm tired of mortal and immortal troubles.
Hera: Zeus, you who gathers clouds and rules away the destinies, do you know what day it is?
Zeus: A usual day with all it's deeds.
Hera: It's an unusual day!
Zeus: My better half, isn't it the day of Phoenix rising from the ashes?
Hera: Oh, no, it's something white and light.
Zeus: A white cloud?
Hera: The eve of Christmas which is celebrated all over the world.
Zeus: And?
Hera: I believe we shouldn't ignore it.
Zeus: I, of course, gather clouds and rule destinies but your words are like Phoenix secret for me. Don't you know, my better half, that there is no such a tradition on Olympus.
Hera: Let it be [19].
Zeus: And what about snow?
Hera: The fire is slowly dying
And my dear, we aren't still goodbying,
_As long as you love me so_
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow [20].
Zeus: And?
Hera: Aren't you the father of gods and men? Aren't you who makes laws and traditions?
Zeus: Hera, do not go on hoping that you will hear all my thoughts, since these will be too hard for you, though you are my wife. Unbosom yourself.
Hera: Well, the idea to invite the Olympians for the Christmas feast, and make this matter of great importance came to my mind.
Zeus: Saying that I am shocked, means saying nothing. Anyway, how are you going to treat and entertain your guests.
Hera: As for entertainment, it's up to Apollo and his Muses to decide what to do. And as for treating, it will be my province. I will bake a huge bun.
Zeus: May I ask you what bun is?
Hera: It is a hero of the Russian fairy tale "Bun"
Zeus: I think of fairy tales as stories intended for very young children.
Hera: If you read fairy tales and about them you would know that your thesis is a relatively modern idea. In the oral tradition, magical stories were enjoyed by listeners young and old alike, while literary fairy tales (including most of the tales that are best known today) were published primarily for adult readers until the 19th century [21].
Zeus: Oh, Dear Lady, it's your reading that makes you so romantic. But romance is the thing of the past, and if you remember, it's the 21st century, the time of innovations, flying into space and you.
Hera: Nonsense! Romance never dies. It is like the moon, and lives for ever [22].
Zeus: Sounds good! Arguing with you is a Deed of Heracles. O.K. The world is really very beautiful and not because it snows but because:
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world [23].
Hera: And I think to myself that, with your content, I may begin preparations.
Fairy: And she begins. First of all she calls Hermes and orders him to notify everybody to take part in the celebration. Then she calls Apollo and orders him to make up an entertainment program. After that, she takes a vessel with ambrosia, a vessel with nectar, some flour and makes a special bun with Olympian ingredients, puts it into the microwave stove for half an hour, and when it is baked takes it out and leaves for cooling on the window sill. She leaves the parlour to order the nymphs to decorate The Christmas tree. Meanwhile, the bun opens his eyes, rolls off the window sill to the bench, from the bench to the floor, and stretching himself, comes to the mirror.
Bun: Who is this? Is it me? If it's me, how can it be? In the Russian tale I was eaten by a fox. She was a cunning dog and could outwit me. But as I see, I am alive and, to tell the truth, good looking. And though I don't really believe in reincarnation, I think it's fun to think about it but facts are stubborn. Maybe I have won the lottery? If it is true, then I wonder where I am ( looking around). If I do something to understand it, then I am in a wonderful palace. Following simple logic I can make a conclusion: first, if my parents live in such a cool house, they are rich enough; second, if I was made of such delicious ingredients, real food of gods, but not of a duster and two handfuls of flour, they are oligarchs. Whoever they were not, I am lucky. But my dress code leaves a lot to be desired. It's high time to command the services of the stylist.
Fairy: On the way to the stylist the Bun meets Hermes.
Hermes: Hello, fatty Bun!
Bun: Hello. Who are you?
Hermes: I am Hermes, an Olympian god in Greek religion and mythology, son of Zeus and Pleiade Maia.
Bun: Glad to meet you and what are you?
Hermes: I am a god of transitions and boundaries, because Baltic Humanitarian Journal. 2017. X 6. № 4(21)
I am quick and cunning, move freely between the worlds of the mortal and divine, as an emissary and messenger of the gods. I am protector and patron of travelers, herdsmen, thieves, orators and wit, literature and poets, athletics and sports, invention and trade [24].
Bun: I see. And where have you been? Where are you going to? [25]
Hermes: Hera, the goddess of goddesses sent me to invite everybody to participate in the first Christmas celebration, the Olympians have ever had. I am sure you will be among the guests too.
Bun: It will be an honour for me to be among the divine.
Hermes: But you must fulfill one condition - to make a surprise.
Bun: Agreed!
Fairy: And the Bun goes on rolling, and meets a fair creature he ever saw.
Bun: Hello, the fairest of all I have ever met! Who are you?
Aphrodite: I am Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation.
Bun: Such joy and happiness you bring You are like a dream A guiding light that shines in the night Heavens gift to me You are so beautiful to me [26].
Aphrodite: Yes, I am beautiful, because I arose from the sea foam, near the island of Cyprus and for this reason I am often called "Cyprian" especially in the poetic works of Sappho [27].
Bun: Heaven, I am in heaven...[ 28].
Aphrodite: Bye, fatty Bun. See you soon. Don't forget about a surprise.
Fairy: And the Bun goes on rolling along the rainbow and meets Athena.
Bun: Hello, pretty lady! Are you a goddess, too?
Athena: Don't you recognize me? Haven't you read Greek mythology?
Bun: I'm sorry, I was born an hour ago and I haven't read anything yet.
Athena: Then let me introduce myself. I am Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom, courage, crafts and skill. I am also a shrewd companion of heroes and goddesses of heroic endeavour [29]. And who are you?
Bun: My service record is not so long as yours. I am a delicious Bun made from ambrosia and nectar.
Athena: Where are you rolling to?
Bun: I am rolling to the stylist to have my image changed.
Athena: What claim do you lay on your appearance? As for me, you look rather tasty.
Bun: It's very kind of you but I prefer to look more stylish than tasty.
Athena: Then good luck and take care of yourself.
Fairy: Meanwhile Hera is preparing for the party. The Christmas tree is being decorated and the guests are gathering. The first to come is Apollo and his nine Muses, the source of inspiration to poets. Apollo is the god of music, poetry, and intellectual inquiry, and that's why he is responsible for the entertainment. Finally, everybody arrives except the Bun.
Hera: Dear gods and goddesses, it is my pleasure to greet you on this wonderful occasion. I've been waiting for it for the whole year and .(singing)
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I want to know
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleight bells in the snow [30].
Apollo: It's Christmas all over the world, a special night when everybody can join around one tree and make Christmas merry. It's honorable for my muses and me to participate as organizers, though it was not easy for us as we have never had such a tradition. So, I had to surf the Internet to get know how it is celebrated all over the world and in Greece nowadays. And I understand that Christmas
traditions are as diverse as the cultures and religions of each and every country in the world. What on earth possesses them to decorate a Christmas tree every year? Why do they kiss under the mistletoe? But there is one thing that joins people, the wish to be happy and merry, to believe in peaceful future, friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation. And the decision has been made to arrange the party which will be remembered for it's beauty, fun, humour and good emotions.
The party program consists of nine items each of them will be conducted by one of the Muses. The first to begin is Clio Proclaimer.
Clio: I am the patron of history, and inventor of historical and heroic poetry. My symbol is a scroll [31]. Thinking of how to begin the party, an idea came to me to tell you an interesting Christmas story, and I've decided to tell you how people in hot countries celebrate this holiday:
* When he gets to Australia, Santa gives the reindeer a rest and uses kangaroos or 'six white boomers' (a popular Australian Christmas song!). He also changes his clothes for less 'hot' ones! On Boxing Day most people often have barbecues at the beach. A famous Yacht race from Sydney to Hobart in Tasmania is also held on Boxing Day.
* In Africa Christians sing carols from Ghana on down to South Africa. Meat is roasted, gifts are exchanged and family visits are made. Even in some of African's predominantly Muslim countries, Christmas is still marked for celebration. In Dakar, Senegal's capital, hawkers are happy to sell plastic trees and inflatable santas. If you are in the Atlas mountains in Morocco, there is little chance of anyone enjoying white Christmas in Africa.
* Because South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas comes in the summer. So there's lots of sun and beautiful flowers in full bloom.
On Christmas day afternoon, people visit family and friends or might go for a trip into the country side to play games or have a swim
*Madagascar is an Island off the east coast of Africa, so it is very warm at Christmas time! Even though it's hot, common decorations include holly, robins and snow even though none of them exist in Madagascar!
Most Malagasy's only exchange small presents. In Madagascar, Santa Claus is called 'Dadabe Noely'
* In India, a multicultural country, all festivals are celebrated with lots of joy and gusto. You may be surprised to know that India is home to a considerable population of Christians, who, along with the rest of the country, celebrate Christmas with their own rituals and traditions.
Calliope Beautiful Voice: I am chief of nine Muses and the patron of epic poetry. My symbol is writing tablet [32]. Thinking of my contribution to the party, I found it reasonable to hold a contest « Writing a letter to Santa Clause». The volunteers should sit at the tables. As it is your first experience of writing a letter to Santa Claus, I'll give you a prompt of 10 easy steps ( which must be taken into account ) to write it:
1. Get in the Christmas mood.
2. Use some special paper or pen.
3. Start your letter with a greeting. Good ways to start your letter include 'Dear Santa' or 'Dear Santa Claus'.
4. Let Santa know who is writing a letter.
5. Ask Santa how he's been. Santa only hears from you once a year, so start asking about something, it's polite to ask how he's doing or how the reindeer and elves and Mrs. Claus have been.
6. Tell him how good you have been this year. What good deeds you have done for mortals.
7. Politely let him know what you'd like.
8. Thank Santa for being so kind. Then end your letter with a closing such as Sincerely' or 'Love' or 'Best wishes', and sign your letter.
9. Put your letter in the envelope and seal and stamp it.
10. Give the letter to me to send. Then wait patiently for reply.
(Under the song "Driving Home for Christmas" the

volunteers write letters. Then Calliope collects them and put into the mailbox)
Terpsichore Rejoicing in the Dance: I am the Muse of dancing and choral singing and always dance around with a lyre in my hands [33]. To create the party atmosphere I am going to held a song quiz.
( Sheets of paper with Christmas song quiz questions are given to everybody and then collected for jury)
Erato: In Greek mythology I am one of the Greek Muses. My name would mean 'desired' or 'lovely', if derived from the same root as Eros. I am the Muse of lyric poetry, especially love and erotic poetry. Since the Renaissance I am often shown with a wreath of myrtle and roses holding a lyre, or a small kithara, a musical instrument that Apollo and I invented [34]. It seems to me that it will be rather enjoyable to hold a karaoke competition.
Thalia Festive or Flourishing: I preside over comedy and pastoral poetry which explains why I hold a comic mask. I also like to traipse about meadows, forests and rural places that's why I carry the shepherd's crook as well [35]. When Apollo ordered me to make a surprise on the occasion, I didn't rack my brains over it but made a decision to hold a gastronomic competition among mortals to show you what they eat for Christmas dinner. I'd like to submit to your judgment the best cooked dishes. To my mind, they are worth your tasting and appreciation.
(Everybody helps with sandwiches and salads cooked beforehand)
Euterpe: I am one of the nine Muses, the goddess of music, song and dance. My name was derived from the Greek words, meaning "giver of much delight". My domain is lyric poetry and attribute - the double flute [36]. Unlike Thalia, I racked my brains over the point , until it dawned on me that it would be amusing for you to see how people in the world dance on this day. I have flown across the world and was captured by the dance "Simd" - a symbiosus of national choreography, elegance and dignity. It is an Ossetian folk group dance. The beauty of Simd is in the strict graphic outline of the dance, the contrast between black and white costumes, the softness of movements, the strictness of line formations, and the harmony created by all of the above. I've made a video to show you. Isn't it a surprise? [37] ( Everybody is watching video) Polyhymnia: My name means «the one of many hymns». In Greek mythology I am the Muse of sacred poetry, sacred hymn and eloquence as well as agriculture and pantomime. I am depicted as very serious, pensive and meditative, and often holding a finger to my mouth, dressed in a long cloak and veil and resting my elbow on a pillar. Sometimes I am accredited as being the Muse of geometry and meditation [38]. Today I am not going to be serious and meditative to say nothing of holding a finger to my mouth, and., to cut a long story short , I am going to praise the best in the Christmas quiz I have prepared for immortals and I hope the quiz won't become the apple of discord.
(The lists with the quiz are given to all the participants to do it for 5 minutes.)
Melpomene: I am «the one that is melodious», initially the Muse of singing. Then I became the Muse of Tragedy, for which I am best known. My name was derived from the Greek verb melpo or melpomai meaning «to celebrate with dance and song». I am often represented with a tragic mask and wearing the cothurnus, boots traditionally worn by tragic actors. Often, I also hold a knife or club in one hand and the tragic mask in the other. On my head I am wearing a crown of cypress [39].But today, I am holding a bottle of champagne the drink number one in Christmas celebration among the mortals. They do not only drink it but compete in decorating the bottles. For us immortals, used to drink nectar, it will be a real surprise, and we will have both an opportunity to carry out tasting of the content of the bottle, and enjoy the decorations. I have collected the best, in my opinion, patterns for your praising.
(Meanwhile the members of jury are praising the bottles,
the Bun appear.)
Bun: I am sorry, I am late but I had too much to do. To begin with, I had my image changed and, though it took me enough time and money, the end, I think, justifies the means. Isn't it the first surprise, 'cause who can guess I am the Bun. Neither round, nor ruddy, neither big, nor small. Some very innovated model with all merits and demerits. I am not so silly and naïve as I was in the Russian fairy tale. Now no one can eat me even the skillful fox. On my way to the stylist I met Hercules and we, at once, made friends. I asked him to give me a piece of advice how to make a surprise. And he told me: «Go I Know Not Whither and Fetch I Know Not What» [40]. And an idea will come to your mind. I followed his advice, and the blue, I realized that the best surprise for you will be He without whom no Christmas is celebrated and He is here.
(Under the lyrics «Santa Claus Is Coming To Town» , Santa is appearing with a sack of presents.
Ourania (Urania): I am one of the nine Muses. In the Classical era, I was named Muse of astronomy and astronomical writings and, that's why, I am depicted pointing at a celestial globe with a rod [41]. As far as I know, Christmas, all over the world, is usually celebrated with dancing, eating, drinking various beverages, and watching light fireworks. To end the festival by fireworks is a popular tradition in many cities and countries. «I don't wanna be the exception, To get a bit of your attention» [42] So, my surprise will be more original and amusing than firework because it is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions and the name of it is Aurora Borealis.
It is produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetosphere plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost.
( Everybody is watching video with the natural phenomenon.)
