: in this paper analysis of the values of the performance indicators measuring the overall efficiency of the hotel and restaurant companies of the region of Vidin, Bulgaria for the period from 2009 to 2011 is done. Statistical data is used. The values of these indicators give an estimate for the efficiency of tourism activities of the region. The analysis is done for the region of Vidin, but the approach and indicators can be used to perform analysis of tourism hotels and restaurants sub-sector in other regions of Bulgaria or in other regions of the world.

Abstract: in this paper analysis of the values of the performance indicators measuring the overall efficiency of the hotel and restaurant companies of the region of Vidin, Bulgaria for the period from 2009 to 2011 is done. Statistical data is used. The values of these indicators give an estimate for the efficiency of tourism activities of the region. The analysis is done for the region of Vidin, but the approach and indicators can be used to perform analysis of tourism hotels and restaurants sub-sector in other regions of Bulgaria or in other regions of the world.

In this paper analysis of the values of the performance indicators measuring the overall efficiency of the hotel and restaurant companies of the region of Vidin, Bulgaria for the period from 2009 to 2011 is done. In this study statistical data is used, provided by the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria. The values of these indicators give an estimate for the efficiency of tourism activities of the region. The analysis is done for the region of Vidin, but the approach and indicators can be used to perform analysis of tourism hotels and restaurants sub-sector in other regions of Bulgaria or in other regions of the world, as it allows significant issues and trends in tourism to be outlined and reasonable proposals for tourism development in a region to be made.

In 2011 8% of all business enterprises in the region of Vidin operate in hotel and restaurant sector. Their share has remained the same as it has been in the previous two years - 2010 and 2009. Significantly lower is the share of the production (output) of the hotel and restaurant companies - it is 2% of the overall production of the companies operating in all economic sectors in the region of Vidin, as well as the shares of income from operations of the total operating income and net sales of the hotel and restaurant companies of total net income of businesses in all economic sectors (respectively 2% each) in the region of Vidin in 2011. Operating costs of the hotel and restaurant companies represent 2% of the operating costs of all businesses in the region. Therefore, hotel and restaurant sub-sector has relatively lower results than the average ones for all economic sectors in the region of Vidin (see Table 1). 160

During the period 2009-2011 there is a decrease in the number of the companies, operating in the hotel and restaurant sector of 5%, as the decrease in their number is with a more significant rate in 2010 compared to 2009 than in the next period of 2011 compared to 2010. Although there is a decrease in the number of hotel and restaurant companies in Vidin over the period 2009-2011r., there is a significant growth in their production output (4%), revenues (operating income) (14%) and net sales (14%), this being due to the growth in the last 2011 compared to the previous 2010 year. there is an increase in the costs by 10%, which increase is less than the increase in operating income (14%) for the period. This indicates that there is an increase in the economic efficiency of the hotel and restaurant companies in the region of Vidin for the period 2009-2011.

In 2011 profits of hotel and restaurant companies are 2% of the total profits of the companies in all economic sectors in the region of Vidin. Same is the share of the loss of the hotel and restaurant companies - 2% of the loss of all businesses in total in the region of Vidin. Employed and employees in the hotel and restaurant sector represent 7% of the total number of employed and employees in the region of Vidin. It can be concluded that the hotel and restaurant sector is important for providing jobs in the region. Tangible fixed assents acquired are a significant indicator for the intensity of the investment activity. In the region of Vidin fixed assents in the hotel and restaurant sector are only about 1% of the tangible fixed assets of all businesses. However, it should be considered that hotel and restaurant sector is a servicing sector. Servicing sectors require significantly fewer tangible assets than the production of goods (see Table 2).

For the period 2009-2011 there is a significant growth in the profits of hotel and restaurant companies - it is of 53% in total - due to the substantial increase over the last 2011 compared to the previous 2010 year. Another positive trend is the significant reduction in the losses of the hotel and restaurant companies, which is 39% for the period 2009-2011. There is a slight increase in the number of employed and employees in the hotel and restaurant sector of 5%, and an increase in payroll costs by 13%. This is an indicator for the increase company efficiency.

To sum up, there is an increase in economic efficiency of the activities of the companies operating in hotel and restaurant sub-sector of tourism for the period 2009-2011 in the region (district) of Vidin. This conclusion is based on the facts: there are significant growth in profits and reduction in losses of hotel and restaurant companies; there is an increase in the output in hotel and restaurant sector; and operating income has increased by a larger percentage than operating costs.
