AI MEETS CINEMA: THE ROLE OF AI IN MODERN KAZAKHSTAN MOVIE PRODUCTION
Аннотация: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of technology focused on understanding intelligence and creating machines that mimic human-like thinking and behavior. Its development spans across fields like robotics, natural language processing, and speech and image recognition. In recent years, AI has made significant strides and found applications in diverse industries, from autonomous driving and healthcare to financial services and, increasingly, the film industry. This article explores the growing role of AI in Kazakhstan filmmaking. AI has proven to be a powerful tool, boosting efficiency and cutting costs in various stages of production. It also enhances film quality by creating stunning special effects and giving filmmakers new ways to experiment and innovate. However, while AI opens up exciting possibilities, it also comes with its drawbacks—such as the risk of losing the emotional depth and human touch that are often key to meaningful storytelling.

Introduction.
Kazakhstan's film industry, while still relatively young compared to global cinematic giants, has grown significantly over the past few decades. With a rich cultural heritage and a strong tradition of storytelling, Kazakh cinema has begun to make its mark internationally. However, as in many other parts of the world, the film industry in Kazakhstan is undergoing a period of rapid technological change. One of the most significant technological advancements in recent years is the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in movie production. AI's role in global filmmaking has
been well-documented, particularly in Hollywood, where it is used to streamline processes, enhance visual effects, and even generate entire scripts. In Kazakhstan, however, the integration of AI into the movie production process is still in its early stages. Despite this, local filmmakers and production companies are increasingly exploring the potential of AI to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and elevate the quality of their films. This paper aims to examine how AI is being used in modern Kazakhstan movie production, focusing on key areas such as pre-production, production, and post-production, and how it can shape the future of Kazakh cinema.
AI in the music production in movies.
1. Importance of music in the movies.
Composing a movie soundtrack involves crafting music that enhances the narrative and evokes emotion. The length varies by genre, typically ranging from 30 minutes to over two hours, with most scores averaging around 90 minutes. Soundtracks are structured into themes representing characters, settings, or events to deepen the film's impact. In movie series, recurring motifs ensure tonal consistency and strengthen the audience's emotional connection.
AI in the Movie Industry is a new landscape but there were some experiments in the past few years. From the research of the Peiming Sun about this topic, AI expert Andy Herd took a significant step forward in the world of scriptwriting by creating an AI-driven software using Google's open-source machine learning toolkit, TensorFlow. While a human writer brings personal experiences and emotions to their work, the AI relies on patterns and data from existing scripts. This means that the AI can produce creative content, but it lacks the nuanced understanding and depth that human writers infuse into their storytelling
In recent years, AI-generated music has gained attention. Newest technology called Suno that was created in December 2023 showcased its talents by creating instrumentals, vocals and other crucial elements of the song just in seconds. By analyzing thousands of compositions, the AI generated music was extremely similar to the popular songs on chart at the moment. This AI-assisted approach to music composition stands in contrast to traditional methods, offering a new way to blend
creativity and technology. Recent advancements in AI have begun to disrupt various industries, with the music sector increasingly becoming a focal point. A striking example of this is a recent experiment conducted on the YouTube platform, where a user uploaded a lo-fi ja playlist. This playlist that was uploaded in September 2024, praised for its stunning instrumental compositions, received widespread acclaim from listeners, many of whom believed it to be the work of a highly skilled human composer. However, the key detail that surprised everyone was that the playlist was entirely generated by Suno. This experiment serves as a compelling case study on the evolving role of AI in music production and its potential to reshape traditional methods of composition.
2. First AI-generated music production in the Kazakh Cinema.
UVENT's upcoming TV series Ulzhan marks a major milestone for Kazakhstani cinema as the first production in the country to integrate artificial intelligence (AI). This groundbreaking move signals a transformative step for Central Asia's entertainment industry. Ulzhan stands out not only for its innovative use of AI but also for its compelling story about a young girl striving to become a hip-hop artist— a theme that resonates with Kazakhstan's youth.
The series combines traditional artistry with advanced technology. While AI was used to create vocals, beats, and musical textures, renowned Kazakhstani artists wrote the lyrics, ensuring the music maintains its thematic and emotional depth. This approach underscores UVENT's dedication to both innovation and authenticity.
Using AI in Ulzhan presents both challenges and opportunities. Audiences are familiar with the human touch in music, so AI-generated elements may raise questions about authenticity. However, UVENT sees this as a chance to explore new creative directions and build a unique soundscape that complements the series' futuristic narrative.
AI's potential in music production is vast, offering possibilities for enhanced sound design, improved production efficiency, and greater accessibility. For Kazakhstan's film industry—renowned for its cultural and historical storytelling— adopting AI reflects a willingness to innovate and compete globally.
As AI reshapes the entertainment landscape, Ulzhan positions itself at the forefront, blending art and technology to redefine storytelling in Kazakhstan. Viewers can anticipate an unprecedented experience that reimagines AI's role in cinema.
3. Working Process of the Suno AI.
Suno uses the same general approach as large language models like ChatGPT, which break down human language into discrete segments known as tokens, absorb its millions of usages, styles, and structures, and then reconstruct it on demand.
Like R. S. Gyathri explains, ChatGPT utilizes the GPT-3.5 model, which leverages a large language model (LLM) to process vast amounts of data, interpret user input, and deliver relevant responses. The GPT-3.5 model features multiple layers of input analysis, allowing it to generate outputs that mimic human-like conversation through natural language processing. The operation of ChatGPT can be broken down into several key steps. Initially, the user submits a prompt or query into the system. Users can subsequently reply to the response or ask additional questions. This iterative process primarily relies on reinforcement learning, which incorporates user feedback to enhance the model's performance.
As Fachri Helmanto explains, The SUNO system employs advanced voice processing technology to transform poetry into music, offering a variety of features. Users can adjust the melody and harmony to complement the themes of their poetry. Additionally, they have the flexibility to select the appropriate music genre, tempo, and virtual instruments, enabling the creation of a unique composition that captures the essence of the poem. Once the melodies and arrangements are finalized, users can listen to a preview to ensure that the music aligns with their expectations and enhances the poetic ambiance.
